The stellar list of residential development companies on the shortlist for "Residential Company of the Decade" have all seen considerable success over the last 10 years despite the many challenges that the industry has faced during that time. But what does the next decade look like?

Whilst the last few years have seen substantial change in the world of residential development, there can be little doubt that the next decade will need to be transformational if development is to play its part in meeting the very real challenge of climate change.

There is obviously no easy quick fix to the problem. Government will undoubtedly be playing a greater role in meeting these challenges, whether it's the ambition to upgrade all homes by 2035, or the recent proposed ban on fossil fuel boilers, but the tipping point will surely come when the market, both via purchasers from younger generations, and lenders, demand change.

It is those developers who can think strategically, provide innovative solutions and adapt to changing demands that will be best placed to achieve success in the future.

Now is the time for developers to focus their energies on longer-term solutions, such as MMC, retrofitting, mobility hubs - rather than just next year's bottom line.

What is more, a future-looking development strategy will not only embrace sustainability, but also the wider impact of development; whether that is via the role housebuilders play in local communities or keeping a weather eye on corporate governance.

Which residential company will lead the way over the next decade? In our view, the forward-thinking companies which embrace these challenges will also find themselves the most successful in 10 years' time.
