Interesting times

What an interesting time to work in the Living sector. Plenty of recent highs and lows certainly, but seeing the quality and variety of the schemes now coming to market - not to mention the attention given to sustainability, affordability and community building - is truly heartening.

The term ‘regeneration’ feels inadequate to describe the value such developments provide to communities. It is too sterile a word for what, ultimately, describes the creation of places specifically designed to make us feel safe and happy. Places in which to spend time with family, friends and - let’s not forget - pets. Places of sanctuary to have downtime, de-stress and relax. Places where we create lifelong memories.

It is funny that lorry loads of crude building materials can create such emotive places, and that rundown, derelict and lifeless areas can be vibrantly brought to life. This is why working in the real estate sector is so rewarding and fulfilling; buildings really are more than the sum of their parts. They serve a purpose that goes beyond materialism and convenience, shaping who we are and who we want to become.

So, to look at this year’s nominees for Deal of the Year at the RESI Awards 2021 is yet another reminder of why we do what we do. Exciting and inspirational schemes that are sustainable, attractive and facilitate the bonding of new communities and the delivery of lifestyle change.

And all of them brought to market at the same time as a global pandemic and economic recession just happens to be taking place. Delivered during a period throughout which businesses and individuals have suffered a huge amount of distress, not to mention supply chain issues, materials shortages, staff shortages and energy price increases. The nominees have done this in spite of all of the obstacles placed in their way. Their achievements are a lesson to us all, true testament to the resilience, will and determination endemic across the industry.

As I say, what an interesting time to work in the Living sector.
